The NC State Vegetable Pathology Lab studies diseases of cucurbit crops to deliver novel and improved disease management strategies to growers in North Carolina and advance knowledge in the field of vegetable pathology.
Improved detection methods for CDM
CucCAP researchers develop improved detection methods for downy mildews infecting cucurbit crops. Management of cucurbit downy mildew relies on an intensive fungicide program. Timely alerts of appearance of sporangia can help growers to determine need to initiate fungicide sprays. Research by CucCAP scientists developed improved ability to detect airborne sporangia and distinguish among types that infect different kinds of crops. This improved methodology could be used as part of an advisory system to time fungicide applications to protect cucurbit crops.
2023 Vegetable Production Handbooks and Manuals
Land Grant University researchers and Cooperative Extension Specialists collaborate to provide these valuable resources for the vegetable industry. These manuals are updated annually.
Cucurbit growers support endowment
Growers, packers and producers of cucumber, watermelon and sweetpotato established the Vegetable Pathology Support Endowment on behalf of Dr. Lina Quesada’s vegetable pathology lab at NC State University through Pickle Packers International, Inc. in 2022.

The 2022 annual meeting theme is “Warming Up to Change,” which will explore the profound changes in plant health research, education, and engagement driven by transformations in climate, technology, and society. We will also work together as participants to find the best ways for APS to support plant health research and the careers of plant pathologists in this time of change.
Cucurbit Disease Management Resources | NC State
The NC State Vegetable Pathology Lab has developed a series of fact sheets describing cucurbit diseases and providing information on how to manage the pathogens causing them. The CucCAP team in collaboration with the Quesada lab developed Spanish translations of these factsheets.
