Michigan Cucurbit update | July 5, 2023
Hard squash and pumpkin planting is wrapping up. Summer squash and cucumbers are being harvested. Some pollination issues were observed in zucchini and summer squash in southwest Michigan last week.
Stay on the lookout for cucurbit downy mildew. Consider starting protectant fungicides on cucumbers, pickles and melons. It was detected on cucumbers in Kent County, Ontario, on July 4, 2023.
Striped cucumber beetle pressure has been extreme in some cucurbit plantings.

Squash is still being picked with good quality and quantity with anthracnose being present at greater frequency. Mosaic virus has also been more prevalent.
CDM reported in Ontario – July 4th, 2023
Cucurbit downy mildew has been identified in a cucumber field in Kent County. Disease presence is very low with less than one percent of the plants exhibiting lesions at this time. The field has been treated with preventative fungicides. This is the first report of cucurbit downy mildew in Ontario for the 2023 growing season.

Cucurbits are being harvested in multiple regions of S.C. In the Midlands, Squash are still being picked with anthracnose present at greater frequency. Mosaic virus has also been more prevalent. Disease pressure is high. Striped cucumber beetle and army worms have been seen on squash.
