Michigan vegetable report | July 21, 2022

Melons, slicing cucumbers and summer squash are being harvested. Early plantings of pumpkin and hard squash are flowering and setting fruit. Cucurbit downy mildew has not been detected in the state at this time. Powdery mildew has been reported by some growers.

Michigan vegetable report | July 14, 2022

This weeks crop report includes cantalope, zucchini squash, high tunnel cucumbers, and pumpkins. Squash bugs have been reported on zucchini squash. Michigan vegetable report | June 30, 2022

Harvest of field-planted fresh market cucumbers, pickles, and summer squash started last week. The striped cucumber beetle population has been reported as “very high” this year by a number of growers. Cucumber beetles can transfer two different diseases that impact marketable yield: bacterial wilt and Squash Mosaic Virus (SqMV). The beginning of July has marked the onset of downy mildew on cucumber in Michigan. At this time, downy mildew infection has not been detected on cucumber. Phytophthora fruit rot on pickles continues to be a major threat for some Michigan growers.

Michigan vegetable report | June 23, 2022

Aerial downy mildew spores were detected in Bay and Saginaw counties in mid-June. Growers were advised to start monitoring for downy mildew symptoms and to start using proven protectant fungicides before symptoms begin. Phytophthora fruit rot on pickles continues to be a major threat for some Michigan growers. Effective fungicides must be applied so that they cover the fruit. Fungicides applied to the soil are not effective and do not limit the pathogen. Also, fungicides applied to the foliage are not translocated to the fruit.
