CucCAP scientists test new squash breeding lines for performance and resistance to Phytophthora crown and root rot

In field and greenhouse trials where plants were heavily inoculated with spores of the pathogen Phytophthora capsici, the Cornell breeding lines out-survived most other commercial checks and accessions reported to have resistance to Phytophthora crown and root rot. These materials represent a promising start for the development of horticulturally acceptable squash varieties with high levels of resistance to this devastating disease.
