After harvest, high numbers of nematodes were observed in some SC vegetable fields. Nematode management for the next vegetable crop should start as soon as the current crop is done.

Clemson Extension Agents Crop Update: Squash are still hanging on, but with increased disease pressure from powdery mildew and the occasional out break of downy mildew. These plantings are on their last leg and are recommended to be terminated.

In the South Carolina Midlands, Fall squash has produced exceptionally well, with the biggest issue being mosaic virus.

In the Midlands, pythium and gummy stem blight have been reported on cucumber. Anthracnose and mosaic virus have been reported on squash. Downy mildew is beginning to appear on pickling cucumbers. Gummy stem blight control has worked well on watermelons which are being harvested. In the Pee Dee region, watermelons and cantaloupe are showing some Pythium on young fruits. According to the South Carolina Grower, cucurbit downy mildew was identified in South Carolina on May 12. The identification came from butternut squash grown in a sentinel plot at the Coastal Research and Education Center in Charleston, South Carolina.
