Pseudoperonospora cubensis Downy mildew causes angular, yellow to brown lesions on top of the leaves that are restricted by leaf veins. When conditions are favorable, for example early in the morning when moisture is higher, lesions observed on the underside of the leaf may be covered in dark “down”. This downy growth is masses of […]
Grumet et al.
R. Grumet is the lead PI for the USDA-SCRI CucCAP project: CucCAP: Leveraging applied genomics to increase disease resistance in cucurbit crops. The primary objectives of the CucCAP project are to develop genomic and bioinformatic breeding tool kits for accelerated crop improvement across the Cucurbitaceae; use these tools to facilitate introgression of disease resistance into commercially valuable cucurbit cultivars; and provide readily accessible information to facilitate disease control.

Cucumber
Cucumber (Cucumis sativus) is one of the most important cultivated cucurbits with a global production of 70 million tonnes in 2013 (FAOSTAT). It is typically eaten fresh, or as a processed product (i.e., pickled). The major cucumber market types are the American processing and fresh market types, the Dutch gherkin and greenhouse types, the Asian […]
Cucurbit Breeding
Genomic-assisted breeding for disease resistance in cucurbit cultivars Cucurbit growers and processors consistently identify fungal/oomycete pathogens and insect-transmitted viral diseases as major production constraints causing severe reductions in yield, loss of fruit quality, and increased labor and expense for control. Disease-resistant cultivars are the most cost-effective and environmentally desirable solution to these problems. Since acceptance […]

Project overview
The objectives of the CucCAP project are to develop genomic approaches and tools for cucurbit species, perform genomic-assisted breeding to introgress disease resistance into cucurbit cultivars, to perform economic impact analyses of cost of production and disease control, and to provide readily accessible information to facilitate disease control. Each objective includes integrated research and extension & outreach approaches. Research Approaches […]
Leveraging Applied Genomics to Increase Disease Resistance in Cucurbit Crops
Harnessing genomic resources for disease resistance and management in cucurbit crops – bringing the tools to the field The objectives of the CucCAP project are to: Develop advanced bioinformatic and genomic tools for cucurbits Identify, map, and develop markers for resistances to priority diseases identified by cucurbit industries Introduce resistances into advanced breeding lines […]
