Downy mildew on cucumber or any other cucurbit has not been confirmed yet in 2019 in Michigan or in adjacent states of the Great Lakes region. Our molecular analysis of the spore traps has recently confirmed cucumber downy mildew spores in the air via our molecular testing a couple of times, but this has not happened frequently or to the level that might be expected if downy mildew was well established in our production areas.
Cucurbit Downy Mildew
Cucumber downy mildew detected in NC | NC State
Characteristic symptoms include angular, chlorotic lesions on the upper surface of cucurbit leaves and gray sporulation on the underside of the leaves. Sporangiophore structures typical of Pseudoperonospora cubensis, causal agent of CDM, can be observed using a hand lens or under a dissecting microscope.
Managing Mildews and Phytophthora Blight Successfully in 2019 | Cornell Vegetable Program
Long Island Horticultural Research & Extension Center’s Margaret T. McGrath discussed cucurbit disease management in New York at the 2019 Empire State Producers Expo. Managing diseases is an important component of a successful production program for cucurbit crops because there are several diseases that can reduce yield or fruit quality when not adequately managed. The mildews […]
CucCAP Plant Pathologists conduct Disease Management Workshops
Extension vegetable pathologist Mary Hausbeck was joined by CucCAP plant pathologists Lina Quesada from NC State and Chris Smart from Cornell University for a series of disease management workshops in Michigan.
Phytophthora and Downy Mildew Workshop for Vegetable Growers
Learn the latest research-based strategies for managing cucurbit downy mildew and Phytophthora capsici in pickling cucumbers. Our special guest Dr. Lina Quesada-Ocampo of North Carolina State University—a national leader in research on cucurbit downy mildew-will partner with Dr. Mary Hausbeck to give an in-depth overview of the biology and control of these devastating diseases.
Phytophthora Workshop for Vegetable Growers
Get a gameplan for managing Phytophthora rot in zucchini and winter squash grown for Michigan’s processing industry. Our special guest Dr. Chris Smart of Cornell University will team up with Dr. Mary Hausbeck to share real-world management strategies for this disease based on years of research on Phytophthora-infested ground.
Phytophthora and Downy Mildew Workshops for Vegetable Growers
Phytophthora blight in vegetables and other cucurbits is complicated by the fact that downy mildew may also be a problem. While similar in some ways, Phytophthora blight is different from downy mildew in a number of ways. Phytophthora movement through the air is limited, unlike downy mildew. Phytophthora survives over winter and thrives in hot […]
Scientists Are Fighting For The Stricken Pickle Against This Tricky Disease | NPR
According to USDA records, pickling cucumber acreage declined nearly 25 percent between 2004 and 2015. Globally, downy mildew threatens fields as far flung as India, Israel, Mexico and China. “This is the number one threat to the pickle industry,” says vegetable pathologist Lina Quesada-Ocampo of North Carolina State University. The growers, she says, lose money on failed crops […]
