Florida watermelons benefit from UF/IFAS research
Plant disease and water information from University of Florida Extension and researchers helped Florida watermelon farmers grow a bumper crop in 2023. Part of this year’s success came from partnerships between the industry and UF/IFAS research and Extension to provide information on disease management and extended water and nutrient programs, keeping the crops healthy and productive much longer than normal.
Cucurbit downy mildew in Michigan
The first symptoms of cucurbit downy mildew disease on pickling cucumber plants in a commercial production field have been verifiedby qPCR in the Saginaw County lab on July 19, 2023. The statewide spore trapping network to detect downy mildew spores in the air has had positives in multiple counties.

In the Midlands, pythium and gummy stem blight have been reported on cucumber. Anthracnose and mosaic virus have been reported on squash. Downy mildew is beginning to appear on pickling cucumbers. Gummy stem blight control has worked well on watermelons which are being harvested. In the Pee Dee region, watermelons and cantaloupe are showing some Pythium on young fruits.
