Analyses of high-quality genome sequences of Cucurbita maxima and C. moschata reveal an ancient allotetraploidy event in Cucurbita. The two subgenomes of paleo-allotetraploid Cucurbita show limited interchromosomal rearrangements, and display no genome dominance and biased fractionation. Allele-specific expression analysis in the hybrid of C.maxima × C. moschata detects transgressive expression correlated with heterosis in important agronomic traits.
