A collaboration between horticulturists and bioinformaticists has received a $6.5 million USDA grant to identify genetic regions useful for breeding disease-resistant melons, squash and pumpkins. Research Project: Screening Watermelon Germplasm and Identifying Molecular Markers Associated with Cucumber Green Mottle Mosaic Virus (CGMMV) Resistance

Objective: 1. Evaluate watermelon germplasm core collections from USDA and China for resistance to cucumber green mottle mosaic virus (CGMMV). 2. Develop breeding populations and determine the genetic inheritance of resistance to CGMMV in watermelon. 3.
